1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Vin #48667W133570 Engine: Chevrolet Turbo-Air 6 cylinder Transmission: 4 speed manual Mileage: 509 The Chevrolet Corvair, which debuted in its original form back in 1960, saw many iterations by the end of its first generation production run in 1964. With its design and ethos similar to that of the Volkwagen Beetle, the Corvair was Chevrolet's answer to affordable people's car. After 3 years of production, the culmination of hundreds of thousands of Corvairs sold was the Monza Spyder. Though it was loosely marketed as a separate model from the standard Corvair, the Monza Spyder was realistically a trim level. The extra cost for the Spyder back in 1964 was $317.45óa considerable sum for back then (equatable to about $2735 today). The Spyder package consisted primarily of an enlarged 2.7L (164ci) Flat-6 motor, amongst other Spyder special features, including upgraded braking and suspension systems, full instrumentation with a tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, Spyder logos on the front fenders, and spider-themed logos on the wheel center caps. Importantly, air conditioning, the three-speed stick, and the Powerglide automatic were not available for Monza Spyder models, and the 4-speed manual was the only option. Although 1964 was the last year for the original Corvair, a number of worthwhile improvements were added nonetheless. Chief among which were redesigned engine hardware and gaskets designed to improve oil sealing on the rocker arm covers, as well as a transverse rear leaf camber-compensating spring to improve rear stability and handling. A total of 199,387 Corvairs were built for 1964, of which, only 6480 coupes and 4761 convertibles were Spyder models. Therefore, the 1964 Monza Spyder is one of the rarer, more improved variants available for the first generation of Corvair. This particular example has remained with its current owner since 2013 who has carried out restoration work continuously since acquisition. Numerous receipts documenting this restoraion will be inlcuded with the sale alongside the original Corvair owner's documents such as the introduction, owner's manual, and convertible top operation manual.
