Important Concert Quality Antonio Stradivari, Cremona circa 1737 Violin, "The McKay". Bearing original paper label, "Antonius Stradivarius faciebat Cremonensis Anno 1737." Fine grain bookend matched alpine spruce front, flame maple back, ribs and neck. Original cochineal red and brown varnish unique to the workshop of Stadivarius. Measures: back 356.66mm L; upper bouts 166.9mm; middle bouts 108.8mm; lower bouts 206.0mm. Certificates: Certificate of authenticity by William E. Hill & Sons, London, reissued by David Hill on April 7, 2015. "We certify that the violin submitted to us was made, in our opinion, by Antonio Stradivari of Cremona and bears a label 1737." Certificates of authenticity and letters of valuation from master violin maker Phillip Injean and violin dealer Andy Fein of Fein Violins. Dendrology Report: Complete dendrochronology reports and critique by Prof. Dr. Paolo Cherubini, Europe's leading dendrochronologist. Provenance: Gordon McKay (1821-1903) American businessman and philanthropist who left a substantial amount of his fortune to Harvard University. E.F. Bryant One of the trustees of the estate of Gordon McKay and from which he purchased the violin. Antonio Gerardi (1891-1981) Played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1912-1927 and with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1931-1957. Gerardi bought the violin from E.F. Bryant, trustee in 1924. Herman Silberman (1906-1988) Played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1945-1971. He added the instrument to his insurance in 1969. Silberman was also in a Stradivarius quartet. The current owner acquired the violin at auction in October of 1998 Publications: The Boston Post, Wednesday, June 24, 1903 photograph and caption showing Gordon McKay's five violins including this Stadivarius. Publications: The Boston Globe, Friday, April 11, 1930 The article states, " Antonio Gerardi of the Boston Symphony Orchestra will be performing at 7:30 from Radio WBZA. Mr. Gerardi's performance tonight also centers on his instrument, an old and famous Stradivarius which once belonged to the late Gordon McKay."
