However, only one of his projects bears his name on its badge. Originally formed in 2005, Fisker Coachbuild, could be considered his first personal foray into the automotive space however, these cars were simply re-bodied examples of cars produced by other manufacturers, such as the Mercedes SL55 and BMW 645ci. It was not until 2007, upon the formation of Fisker Automotive, that Fisker unveiled his first fully bespoke car design, the Karma. The Fisker Karma, first unveiled in 2008, was designed as a stylish luxury sedan with a punctuated focus on environmental impact and sustainability. Accordingly, all Karma's came equipped driven by a pair of 120 kW (161 hp) electric motors that receive power from a 20.1 kWh lithium ion battery mounted throughout the floor and spine of the vehicle. These electric motors drive the rear wheels at all times, categorizing the Karma as a range-extended electric vehicle, due to its supplementary GM-sourced front-mounted 260hp, 2.0-liter Ecotec four-cylinder direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine. This engine only engages when battery charge is required or if it is called upon via the "Sport" paddle on the steering wheel, powering the on-board generator for the batteries. Overrall, the Karma was originally rated 400hp and nearly 1,000 lb-ft of torque, as well being capable of nearly 32 miles of fully-electric driving! Other environmentally conscious design elements of the Karma included a solar paneled roof as standard to aid the cabin climate control system as well as other 12v-battery controlled systems. The interior was also fitted with an eco-friendly interior, consisting of reclaimed wood, crystal glass, and vegan materials. However, leather seating options were still available. The official production of the Fisker Karma, which began in July 2011, was carried out from a factory in Finland however, this only lasted until November 2012, before financial and supplemental difficulties shelved production altogether.
