1956 Chevrolet Corvette

VIN E56S002303 TRANSMISSION 2 Speed Automatic MILEAGE 75 Numbers Matching and Restored Engine and Transmission Circa 2022 ConcoursLevel Interior Restoration New Date Coded Top One of 166 Built for 1966 in Aztec Copper/Beige 75 Miles Since Restoration The original Corvette, which breached into the sports car scene in 1953, was almost immediately thrust into a tumultuous environment. Not just in the marketplace, but more importantly, internally within Chevrolet and inherently GM. Over the three years following its release, a large amount of critical feedback, as well as low volumes and high pricing contributed to a lackluster performance both on the road and the balance sheet. Fortunately, the intention to establish the Corvette as the premier American sports car was backed by an important team of people, namely Chevrolet President Ed Cole, engineer Zora Duntov, and Harley Earl. Drawing from the knowledge and feedback collected since 1953, the 1956 C1 Corvette represented the first major redesign of the original Corvette. The 1956 Corvette received an exterior redesign, featuring the iconic "Cove" inserts on the sides, as well as smoother exterior lines and exposed head lights with chrome surrounds. The facelift also included many other standard features for the first time on a Corvette, such as external door handles, roll-up windows, and adjustable passenger seating. Options expanded to include power steering, a removable auxiliary hardtop that was virtually waterproof, and power windows. A V8 engine was now the standard option, with 3 variants available, featuring dual 4-barrel carburetion, higher compression ratio, and new manifolds with ìtwin pipeî exhausts. This was harnessed by either a 3-speed manual transmission, or optional Powerglide automatic. In total, GM manufactured only 3,467 Corvettes for 1956, making it the third-rarest model year in terms of quantity produced. However, its improved perception and influence undoubtedly contributed to the continuation of the marque. This 1956 Corvette is a stunning, fully restored, and numbers matching example of this important model year. Sporting its original color, Aztec Copper, this Corvette is one of only 402 produced for 1956 in this shade. Including its original Beige interior in factory-fresh restored condition, it is reportedly one of only 166 to be built with this overall specification. As noted in a previous seller's advertisement included with this lot, this Corvette is claimed to have lived amongst an extensive private collection, housed within a purpose-built building for over 25 years. It is believed that the frame-off restoration and repaint was performed in 1985, however, much of the interior restoration was completed over the past few years by the current owner. The majority of the interior restoration parts were sourced from well-known upholsterer, Al Knoch Interiors, including the seats, door trim, carpets, and dashboard. The interior gauges are original with a rebuilt speedometer, however the clock is noted is inoperable. The original Wonderbar radio is still present and functional, including reception for FM radio. The exterior convertible top is a brand new unit from Al Knoch, which includes a date stamp and the wheels are wrapped period-correct whitewall tires from American Classic. This example was also originally equipped with option #473, the power folding top, however it is currently inoperable at this time. It is powered by the original, numbers matching 265ci/225hp 2x4bbl solid-lifter V8 engine, channeled through the original matching 2-speed Powerglide transmission. Both underwent restoration in 2022, with receipts detailing the extent of the work, and have since covered merely 75 miles. An original 3-speed manual transmission is also available to purchase alongside this lot for an added fee. Condition: Restored condition.
